While the eyes of the world were on the summer Rio games, we went all sporty too for the Lymington Carnival.
Residents from multiple homes were among a 60-strong Team Colten, alongside carers, activities staff, families and children, who featured in the procession or watched from a VIP viewing area at the Town Hall.
Our walkers were resplendent in an array of athletics, equestrian, water sports, cycling and gymnastics kits.
The taste of Brazil was completed by a specially decorated sailboat that offered a distinctive take on those five famous sporting hoops. Giant rings represented each of our five company values: kind, friendly, individual, reassuring and honest.
Preparations had been under way for months to choose materials for costumes, decide different colours for each home and make outfits, flags, flower arrangements, feathers and jewellery.
Janie Pearman, Belmore Lodge Home Manager and head of our parade team, said: “Everyone really got into the excitement, camaraderie and samba vibe. The Carnival is an event that many will have experienced before and by getting involved once again they continue feeling and being part of the community.”
Resident Jim Giles took part in the parade accompanied by his partner Charlotte. She said: “For residents such as Jim it makes an enjoyable break and a chance to be part of an event, using his nifty wheelchair skills alongside everyone else. All the staff worked so hard in such hot weather keeping everyone safe and having fun. To take part was such a huge pleasure.”
We also enjoyed VIP treatment at the heart of the Rotary Club of Lymington’s Summer Spectacular.
Various parties of residents were collected from their homes by our minibus fleet and brought directly to the showground where they had the use of a restful lounge with wheelchair access and disability toilets.
The aim was to create a pleasing and supportive family environment within easy reach of the many fun activities, field events, displays and trade stands that made up the day.
Jo London, Activities Manager, said: “We aim to give every resident the highest quality of life we possibly can. For many, their personal circumstances mean that it can be difficult to go out and experience these kinds of community events. It was lovely to see our residents smiling and relaxing at the Spectacular and the Carnival. There was a real family feeling about both occasions.”
Lymington Rotary President Adam Ogilvie said: “We are great admirers of the many ways Colten Care involves its staff, residents and families in events such as the Summer Spectacular and the Carnival. Their sponsorship, publicity and organisational help is invaluable to the success of such community occasions.”
