Having spent her entire career in nursing and care home management, Jacky Sylvester was an ideal choice for Operations Manager.
Her new role involves responsibility for eight of our homes in Bournemouth, Poole, West Moors, Longham, Winchester and Salisbury.
Jacky visits them regularly to support the Home Managers and ensure that the homes are run in accordance with our values and are safe, effective and compliant with CQC.
“I look after the whole gamut of operations,” she explained. “No two days are the same because homes and managers vary but you are always seeking a consistent balance of care standards across the group.”
Jacky has a fascinating CV. She has lived in Germany, Cyprus, Hong Kong and South Africa where she helped set up a primary health clinic in Soweto to support families of miners working for the giant AngloGold corporation. “It was in the days before retroviral drugs were available to treat HIV,” said Jacky. “There were genuine challenges but it was a fantastic job. I loved it.”
Jacky has also worked with armed forces personnel both here and overseas and worked her way up to be a regional manager for a national care home provider in the UK.
She is impressed with Colten Care’s approach to care, adding: “Previously I looked after homes that were 90% local authority funded as opposed to having fee-paying residents. Budgets were fixed in advance and that often meant there were rigid staffing levels despite changing needs. It is really rewarding to come to an organisation that evaluates all the time and has staffing that actually reflects needs. I also like the fact we employ our own Colten Companions, hairdressers and so on, and we have receptionists on hand seven days a week.”
Jacky said: “Until I came, I didn’t quite appreciate how beautiful our homes are. We don’t do anything by half measures. Whatever it takes for repairs or refurbishments, the company just gets on with it. This is a great organisation to work for and as I get further into the role I would like my care homes to be rated outstanding in CQC inspections in as many areas as possible. I am a really determined person. If I put my mind to something I really want to achieve it.”
That sense of determination carries over into Jacky’s spare time. She has completed no fewer than 49 marathons, some of them ultra-distance, back-to-back races.
Jacky recently sold her home in Camberley and is moving to Ferndown with her husband to be closer to work.
