Anita Irvine, the new Head of Care at St Catherines View in Winchester, is a dementia specialist who is passionate about treating residents with the dignity they deserve.
Anita has joined us from a care provider in the Midlands, where she has been a home manager for the past three years.
“My priority since joining St Catherines in January has been in looking at the way we all communicate,” she said.
“Dignified terminology is something we should all use when addressing and referring to residents. None of us wants to objectify older people, but it is often easy to refer to them instead of addressing them directly. I have been encouraging staff to think about how they converse with residents and each other. Even little things like saying: ‘I’m taking Mr X for a comfort break’ instead of going ‘to the toilet’ is more dignified.”
Anita is married with two grown-up children and has relocated from her home in Coventry to Emsworth on the Hampshire/ West Sussex border. She said: “I love Emsworth and am really enjoying walking around the harbour and sea kayaking.”
