Beryl’s beautiful meal

Beryls Lunch
Beryl discussing the menu with Chef Lorna Parsons

The fact that our residents enjoy delicious homemade meals every day is a message we reflect in our support for major food and drink award initiatives.

We invite residents, families and team members to help us celebrate our headline sponsorship of both the Taste of Dorset and Hampshire Life Food & Drink awards.

These are highly successful competitions attracting entries from dozens of chefs and eateries in our region ahead of final judging.

This year, we have also entered a ‘Fine Dining Experience’ competition run by Napa, the National Activity Providers Association.

It involved staging a sumptuous lunch for one lucky resident who had the chance to invite ten guests all of whom would dress smartly for the occasion.

Beryl Clifford, who lives at Brook View in West Moors, was the name drawn out of the hat.

As well as choosing the guest list, Beryl discussed and planned her special meal with Chef Lorna Parsons.

Ingredients included organic, seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs grown in the garden at Brook View.

The meal was served in an intimate, quiet lounge. Male guests wore buttonholes of roses from the garden while ladies were each given a display of small roses and lavender.  These were specially created by Brook View residents during an earlier crafts session.  Beryl said: “I thought this was a lovely gesture. I looked around the room and saw ten very happy faces.”

After a welcome prosecco, the lunch party enjoyed a prawn platter starter and a main course of pan fried fillet steak with a choice of bordelaise sauce or garlic butter. Dessert was a strawberry, tayberry and raspberry pavlova. There was a selection of juices and fine wines throughout with coffee and mints to finish off.

Staging the meal was a team effort including a major role for newly appointed Activities Organiser Sarah Harley, a former Kitchen Assistant at Brook View. Sarah said: “It was great to see Beryl and her guests so relaxed and enjoying the day.”

Fran Kershaw, Colten Care Catering Manager, said: “It was lovely to enable Beryl to host her own special dinner party. The experience of sharing a meal and taking time for good quality conversation is vital in creating a real home from home atmosphere.”

Napa is holding a gala tea in London this autumn to announce the winners of its Fine Dining Experience competition.
